Margaret

By Dan Roark

In between taking pictures and waiting for the next good shot, I get to talk to parents and family of the riders as well as the staff, volunteers, and the riders themselves. I catch pieces here and there that spark ideas for a post on the New Hope blog. I get insight that I might not get in another manner, as well as learning about the horses and operations of a non-profit.

I was watching the horse leader drill team practice and taking pictures last Saturday, January 4. The two drill team divisions are 1) independent riders and 2) riders with a horse leader and possible side walkers.

I often get to share emotions with the parents of the riders during lessons that give me an idea of what they’re going through. As a parent myself, it’s easy to identify on some level.

But, most impressive overall, I am able to watch the riders grow up and mature over the years. At first, they’re not sure about the camera and my watching so intently. They also speak very little. In time, though, they begin to pose for me and smile while I’m taking their picture. Then, when they start talking, they definitely start talking.

Which absolutely applies to the four riders of the horse leader drill team, pictured to the left. Margaret, Robbie (not pictured – will be on Flash, who is pictured), Finn, and Ella. All four of them have come a long way.

Come see them perform at Chisholm Challenge next Tuesday at one o’clock in the John Justin Arena on the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo grounds. You won’t regret it!

Ride on and ride for hope.
