At volunteer orientations at New Hope, when asked what brought them to volunteer, the majority of the potential volunteers talk about wanting to work with horses and/or children of special needs. When they say working with horses, they generally mean side-walking and grooming. Some realize that tacking up a horse may be involved – although tacking up a horse is not covered in the orientation. But generally they are thinking about working with horses and riders.
Sean Jacobson was distinctly different. He said he just liked working outdoors and would do anything that needed doing. And he was true to his word. He not only sidewalks when needed, but he looks for things that need doing – as witnessed by the pictures of his feeding hay to Tommy and clipping tree limbs. Sean would rather volunteer than talk about it as you will see. But here’s what he had to say.
What brought you to New Hope to volunteer?
My friend Tyler Sines told me about New Hope and it sounded perfect to me. I love horses and being outside. It was also a chance to help people – even better because two of my coworkers’ kids come to New Hope.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a City Planner with the city of Denton. I’m originally from rural New York state, but I love Texas. I rode horses in college and worked on a farm with horses after after college, so this was the perfect opportunity for me.
Favorite horse: Tommy
Favorite part of volunteering at NH?
Hauling hay and tacking up horses. And feeling useful!
How has volunteering affected you?
It’s so encouraging. It makes me feel valuable, needed, and appreciated.
Sean, we at New Hope appreciate you! You certainly are valuable and needed!
Ride on and ride for hope.
