And now the culmination of the story of Flash meeting Dr. Scholl – through Wyatt Myr, farrier. Wyatt made time in his schedule to give Flash his new shoes when it wasn’t his scheduled New Hope visit, which is every four or five weeks depending on circumstances. Wyatt is not only a farrier, he also teaches polo as well as playing polo. Which is how he broke his back in three places playing polo. For more background, see my previous post on Wyatt. While he was in braces from his injury, Joey was his substitute farrier (see post here).

Wyatt came out on a Thursday, with Natalie, his assistant, to give Flash his new shoes. Wyatt went through the process of putting new front shoes on Flash. He would still not have shoes on his rear hooves. Kim gave Flash “some sleepy medicine” since Flash is sensitive about his hooves. It’s been a very good while since Flash has worn shoes at all, it’s likely his sensitivity to his hooves could stem from that.

After he got the shoes ready, and Natalie had cut and shaped leather pads for the shoes, Wyatt employed a technique that he had learned while he was laid up and in braces. It was like he learned the technique just so he could help Flash, but either way, life is a matter of timing.

Then Wyatt nailed the shoe down with the leather pad. Then he put Farrier’s Choice Hoof Pack in the hole left at the back of the hoof between the hoof and the leather pad. The combination of the two products creates – wait for it – a gel pad, reminiscent of Dr. Scholl’s gel soles.
