Missy in happier days.

By Dan Roark

Knowing that it is an aging herd still doesn’t prepare all of those involved for one of the horses being let go. Our dear Missy was ravaged with tumors as a result of colon cancer and it was necessary to let her go today. Although it isn’t any comfort for those still living, Missy is no longer in pain.

The beautiful gray Arabian, affectionately known as Grandma, or Princess, came to New Hope when her owner began riding there. Although she could be prissy, she was loved by all.

I took the following pictures last week. Cy will miss Missy as you can see, but he won’t be the only horse to miss her. I can still hear her squeal (I’ve never heard another horse squeal like she did) when Cy nuzzled her. It was not clear if the squeal was bad or good. Yet she didn’t move away from Cy and they repeated their little dance. Maybe Cy knew something we didn’t. I’ll never forget her squeal though.

Good-bye Missy! We will all miss you!

  1. Missy was always such a gentle, patient horse when I worked with and fed her. She touched many lives, including mine. She will be missed.
